In all tuition, we aim to deepen a child’s understanding, teach skills and create new habits that help them to achieve their learning goals.
We hope to encourage a love of reading in all children. Not only does it improve focus, memory and communication skills, it develops imagination, allows the reader to learn new things and can have a beneficial effect on a child’s mental health.
In order to read fluently, children need to develop their use of phonics. This is acquired systematically using a structured model. Our tutors are experienced in supporting children to develop their phonetic knowledge, thus enabling them to read more confidently and find more enjoyment in a text.
We recognise the importance of reading comprehension. We ensure our pupils can use retrieval techniques, in order to find specific information in a piece of writing. It is vital to develop summarising and inference skills, so that they can develop a deeper understanding and see a text through the eyes of the author.
We see writing as one of the most important skills a child will learn. It is about considering their audience, awakening their imagination, and giving them a purpose to write.
When a child understands a reason for their writing, they will be inspired and excited to create a text. Alongside this, the teaching of spelling, punctuation and grammar, that needs to be learnt in each year group, is taught and practised.
Our aim is for children to develop a love of writing, where the content and structure displays use of different techniques and is written using the appropriate language features, that are expected at different ages and levels. Supporting a child to be a writer gives them a voice, a skill needed throughout their life.
